TALK ON THE ROLE OF JUDGES IN TIMES OF TRANSITION
Prof. Suzannah Linton, Associate Professor and Director of LL.M. Program University of Hong Kong delivered talk on the Role of Judges in Times of Transition at the National Judicial Academy, Nepal on 20th March, 2008 . Delivering talk on the subject, she discussed the role of judges in times of transitional phase. During the talk, she also shared her experiences in conflict transformation and peace building in different missions such as United Nations peacekeeping missions, the Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as international courts and tribunals such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland. She also shared her experiences when she was serving as a prosecutor for Serious Crimes before the Special Panel for Serious Crimes in and advised the East Timor CAVR (Commission for Reception, Truth, and Reconciliation) on International Law. Her focus was on accountability for gross violations of human rights and humanitarian law, and the rebuilding of war-torn nations through rule of law. After the talk, the lively interaction was held between the participants and the speaker. Judges, government attorneys, judicial officers, government legal officers, and private law practitioners were the participants in the program.
